'Before the Squall' is the second of three songs from the 1913 song cycle 'Three Moods of the Sea,' based on the poetry of Arthur Symons. In this dramatic composition, Smyth conveys the turbulent atmosphere using ever-present tremolos, flickering textures, frequent sequences and modulations, and dissonant harmonies of the emerging modernist style.
