Wilder, A :: Sonata No. 2
The 'Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano' by Alec Wilder was written in 1965 for James Pellerite, Professor of Flute at the Indiana State University School of Music. The 'Sonata' is a most successful, lyrical work, affording a gratifying range of expressive possibilities to the performers, especially those who seek to 'dig' into the music more than superficially.
Within each movement of this work one finds the leading clues to the interpretation more from the emotional content and mood than from any formalistic analysis of motives and keys. I believe that in Alec Wilder's music the emotional line comes first, and would suggest that the performer finds that line and follows it out fully, thereby achieving the freedom that is desirable in a good performance of this music.
The restlessness of the first movement, the dreamlike introspection of the second, the humor of the third, and the full-throated outpouring of the fourth are all expressed in free forms, forms that have their unexpected twists and turns as well as modulations that seems to take us to the 'wrong' key. All the more reason, therefore, for the performers to relish the rightness of this music and to provide listeners with the delicious aftertaste that it contains.
