Stahnke, M :: RITUS
Echoes of dark incantations and violent apparitions appear throughout the five movements of Manfred Stahnke's RITUS, for flute, cello, and piano. The opening movement, for flute and cello without piano, sets the scene with tense, hovering cello sostenutos underneath the flute's shifting harmonics. The central three movements describe the rite itself - full of violent outbursts and percussive sounds, and the short fifth movement returns to the sounds of the first, with the piano injecting cold bursts underneath; a summoning writhing against the bounds of the pentagram.
