Stone, J :: Down South
Emerald Rock Publications presents 'Down South' for flute quartet by Julie Stone.
'Down South' is an homage to the sights and sounds in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi where the composer grew up and started her musical journey. The first movement, Mighty Mississippi, reflects the movements of the Mississippi River from serene to tumultuous. The second movement, Ozark Mountains, is a representation of traditional folk music that embodies the serenity and beauty of the mountains. The third movement, Beale Street, is a tribute to the famous street in Memphis where the blues became popular with artists such as W. C. Handy and B. B. King. The final movement, Sweet Tea and BBQ, is in the style of a barn party with dancing and good food. The cover design is a picture of the I-40 “New Bridge” over the Mississippi River that connects Arkansas and Tennessee in Memphis.
