Sullivan, A :: Three Little Maids From School Are We
Sullivan, A
Musicians Publications presents Sir Arthur Sullivan s Three Little Maids From School Are We from The Mikado , arranged for woodwind quintet by Bill Holcombe Jr.
Three Little Maids from School are We is from the opera The Mikado , a comic opera in two acts with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It first premiered in London (1885) where its astounding success brought forth nearly 700 performances, making this the second longest run for a musical theatre work up to that time. Setting the opera in Japan, an exotic locale far away from Britain, allowed Gilbert to satirize British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese. Gilbert used foreign or fictional locales in several operas, including The Mikado , Princess Ida , The Gondoliers , Utopia , Limited and The Grand Duke , to soften the impact of his pointed satire of British institutions.
Holcombe s arrangement is short and sweet at less than 100 measures and should be considered intermediate in difficulty.
