Henry Sussman - Ancient Etudes: Prehistoric Dawn for alto flute alone. A set of three concert studies exploring and stretching particular aspects of the alto flute.
The first, L antiga lluna nocturna brilla sobre insectes foscos [The ancient moonlight on night insects] is a study on quick low tonguing and technical lines and flourishes. The second, La cupula celestial dels deus de moltes escales [The heavenly dome of the many-scaled gods] is a study on harmonics and quickly differentiating tonal colors, low and high. The third, El camp d ossos, fantasmes capes a quilnometres sota terra [The bone field, with ghosts layered for miles underground] is a lush, slow melodic line that stretches breath control.
