Fantaisie sur Les Indes Galantes

Taffanel, P

The Fantaisie on Rameau's opera Les Indes galantes is something of an oddity. Rescued from oblivion at the end of the 19th century by Saint-Saens and Paul Dukas, this opera was recreated some time later. Most probably did Taffanel an active role in the process. Some elements (in the piano interludes, particularly) are of course typical of the 19th century musical approach of that earlier repertoire. As always, one should pay particular attention to articulation (light and precise) and purity of sound, two essential features of Taffanel's technique. It is interesting to note that, whereas the main themes are indeed taken from Les Indes galantes, the beginning of the piece borrows from another Rameau opera: Hippolyte et Aricie.     -Philippe Bernold
