John Tavener presents Song of Ileana, for alto flute alone.
Song of Ileana was inspired by three things. Firstly, by the playing of Ileana herself; second, by imagining the music - the folk music of Macedonia in Northern Greece, stretching back to Byzantium; and thirdly, by the haunting words of Seferis, Greece's greatest poet - "Wherever I travel Greece wounds me."
The music must be played like a folk-song - with great inner stillness - but also with great freedom, as if playing in the vast expanses of the wilds of Northern Greece.
