John Thow's Ha-no (Elegy) for flute and piano was commissioned by the James Pappoutsakis Memorial fund for the 21st annual Pappoutsakis Flute Competition. Ha-no is a word without meaning used in songs for a chief from the Tsimshian people. The slower section is based on a lullaby from the Kwakiutl people, also from the Pacific Northwest.
