Thuille, L :: Sextet in Bb major, Opus 6
Sextet in Bb major, Opus 6
Thuille, L
Ludwig Thuille was born in Bolzano, Italy. His family was of French origin, having lived in Savoy near Montblanc, where there flows a little river known as 'La Thuille'. He received his musical education in Innsbruck and Munich and his unusual talent won him recognition at an early age. At twenty-two he was appointed professor at the Munich Conservatory.
The present Sextet was composed in 1885-1887 and met with instantaneous success. When Richard Strauss heard it he urged the composer to submit it to a competition in Vienna for the award of the Beethoven prize. It is an impressive romantic work with fine effects for its combination of instruments - wind quintet with piano.
