Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
Traditional
Another name for this ancient Polish carol of unknown origin is 'Jesus Holy, Born So Lowly.' First published in the collection 'Spiewniczek Piesni Koscieine' in 1908, it describes the stable scene of the baby Jesus lying in a manger bed with the animals nearby. Also mentioned in the text is the hillside where the shepherds heard the angels' story and rejoiced.
Also known as 'Lying in a Manger,' this piece expresses the magic of Christmas Eve in a very simple, yet compelling manner that has endeared it to many generations of Christians. Its short concise phrases move the piece forward, culminating in the final statement: 'Christ the babe is Lord of all.'
This Polish carol has been arranged for 4-6 C flutes with the 5th flute doubling or substituting as alto flute and a 6th flute doubling or substituting as bass flute. Can be performed satisfactorily with 6 C Flutes.
