Tom Tulen's Five Spheres, for C flute quartet, explores five distinct musical ideas - the titular 'spheres' - across its five movements.
I. Street Organ - There is a small street organ grinding out songs. The paper music roll for this song is slightly out of sync and produces somewhat strange and berserk music.
II. Beetup-upbeat - Upbeats galore. Huge interval leaps and a small, slow interlude emphasize the bounce.
III. Minimal Studies - Designed to give the players a hard time. A tongue-in-cheek comment on minimal music.
IV. Blooz - A bluesy movement, accompanied by a persistent drumming third flute.
V. Rigged Jig - A showy, fast jig to round things off!
