Three Mechanical Duets
Various

The three pieces in this collection for two flutes all have connections to mechanical music.

L. van Beethoven - Allegro from Suite for a Mechanical Organ

This piece is one a number of compositions written for a mechanical organ called the 'Flotenuhr'. This organ consisted of small ranks of flute pipes, whose valves were operated by a rotating wooden barrel driven by the pull of gravity on a series of weights. A clock was often used in conjunction with the organ to make it play automatically at regular intervals.

A. Liadov - The Musical Snuff Box

The charming miniature was written in 1893, taking its inspiration from 18th Century musical snuff boxes, which played a tune when a button was pressed or wound.

W.A. Mozart - Rondo alla Turka from Sonata K. 331

The Rondo from Mozart's Sonata imitates the sound of Turkish Janissary bands, which were popular in the Classical era. This movement was sometimes performed on a piano that featured a 'Janissary Stop': a cymbal and bass drum mechanism operated by a pedal.
