Nourse Wind Publications presents 'The Lark Ascending' by Ralph Vaughan Williams, arranged here for solo flute and flute choir by Darleen Mitchell.

Poetry has often inspired composers to create orchestral masterpieces, some of which have garnered much more attention than the original text. Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending (1914), a romance for violin and piano, is better known in a later revised version from 1921 as an idyllic work for orchestra with violin soloist. In this form, it has far eclipsed Meredith's original poem to become one of the most beloved pieces of classical music in the repertoire. Mitchell's full length transcription highlights the flute's rich and colourful middle range and the gentleness of the upper register.
