Bart Watte's Shadows, for flute and piano, is a thickly-written masterwork that explores the dark tonal writing of the late 20th Century.
In a single movement, Shadows, begins with a piano introduction that emerges from nothing and opens a flute-quasi cadenza, all leading to the opening lullaby statement and melodies. The rest of the piece consists of variation-forms on the lullaby in various tempos and tempos, and with another cadenza, ending in a rubato fantasia.
