Weston, T :: A.N.S (A New Sound)
Coleman Page presents 'A.N.S (A New Sound)' for flute and piano by composer Trevor Weston.
The composer writes about this piece, 'Duke Ellington's essay 'The Race for Space' (1957) ingeniously connects scientific developments in America and the continued fight for equality by African Americans. Implied in this article is a condemnation of the backward, archaic, and unproductive nature of racism. Ellington's solution: create a 'new sound' reflective of a harmonious culture of mutual love and respect. My composition, A.N.S. (A New Sound), attempts to create a 'new sound' with elements of African American music found in many American popular idioms. Taking Ellington's charge to heart, I want A.N.S. to represent a willingness on my part to envision a future with a dedication to inventive reimagining.'
