Concerto op. 24

Wilms, JW

"Johann Wilhelm Wilms was baptized on March 30, 1772 in Witzhelden, near Cologne, a day probably very close to his actual date of birth. He received his first music lessons from his father, who was an organist and a village schoolmaster, an older brother and  the local Lutheran minister.  After working for a short time as a music teacher in Luttringhausen and Elberfeld, Wilms moved to Amsterdam in 1791. Here he deepened his musical education by studying theory with Georg Caspar Hodermann. Before long he was playing in various orchestras, including that of the Felix Meritis society, in which he was second flutist; he also embarked on a career as a concert pianist. 'An exceptional technique and enthusiastic and careful interpretations of contemporary piano music, as well as his improvizations on the piano gained the nineteen-year-old musician a reputation in the salons of the town and ensured his success in the concert-hall.'" - Rien de Reede
