Sonata in Bb minor

Woollett, H

Composer Henry Woollett (b. Le Havre, 13 Aug. 1864; d. Le Havre, 9 Oct. 1936) was of English lineage; however ,his musical life was entirely French. A staunch supporter of French contemporary music, he founded the Cercle de l'Art Moderne, where the most prominent modern compositions were presented to the audiences of Le Havre, where he spent his entire creative life.

The Sonata in B flat Minor was written in 1902 and was premiered by Parisian Georges Barrere. Though the piece is long at some 27 minutes it was well-received at its premiere. The second movement has a thick aura of Tristan, with its ultra-chromatic harmonic language. It is unusual in that it seems to draw more influence from German rather than French models.

For flute and piano. For advanced players.
