Man-Ching Donald Yu's Flaming Passion, for flute, cello, and piano, is inspired by a modern Chinese painting of the same name. The opening of the piece is characterized by impressionistic-like and subtle pianistic gestures, with the cello and flute entering with fragments. As the music reaches its climax, the two instruments and the piano unfold extreme register tone color effects. The music fades out mysteriously to close the piece.
Generally speaking, the music characteristically displays the fusion of Chinese color, pentatonic materials and modern languages, as well as drastic dynamic changes to directly symbolize the vibrant lines and strong gestures in the painting itself.
