Yu, MCD :: The Maximum Speed of Raphael's Madonna
Yu, MCD
Man-Ching Donald Yu presents The Maximum Speed of Raphael's Madonna for flute and piano, written on the surrealistic painting by Dali of the same name.
The music begins with the flute solo where abundances of chromatic materials occur. Soon, the piano part erupts and announces the four-note motif, which represent the four spherical objects in the painting. Various four-note ostinato patterns emerge in the middle section, built off octatonic material. The music builds to the climax by transposing and transforming these ostinato patterns at higher registers, accelerating, symbolizing the Madonna rotating towards maximum speed. After returning to a lower state, the flute solo sections returns and ends with various energetic musical gestures.
