  • Bach, JS :: Sleepers Wake, The Voices Are Calling

Sleepers Wake, The Voices Are Calling

    Bach, JS

Cantata 140 is one of Bach's most famous and beloved sacred cantatas. Based on the late-sixteenth-century hymn composed by Phillip Nicolai, Sleepers Wake is the subject of three of the cantata's seven movements. Originally arranged for two altos and bass flute, alternate C flute and alto parts are included as well, allowing for a performance by almost any combination of flutes. It is particularly effective when performed as a choir piece featuring the lower pitched flutes. Sleepers Wake is often associated with Christmas performances, but this well-recognized work can be enjoyed at any occasion.

  • Bach, JS :: Two Christmas Chorale Preludes

    Two Christmas Chorale Preludes

    Bach, JS

Music for the Christmas season seems to fall into two categories -- the very popular carols and secular Christmas music, and music which is not widely known. These two chorale preludes offer a wonderful addition to a Christmas program because they bridge the wide gulf between the two divisions. The first one, Gottes sohn ist kommen, is a little-known but delicately beautiful chorale prelude. The second one, In Dulci Jubilo, utilizes a melody known as the English carol Good Christian Men Rejoice, but in a setting that provides a different way of looking at that melody. Two Christmas Chorale Preludes will provide an opportunity to include lesser known but still beautiful Christmas music in a concert of familiar works.

Instrumentation: 2 flutes, alto flute, bass flute.

    Farandole
    Bizet, G

Musicians Publications presents Georges Bizet's Farandole from L Arlesienne Suite No. 2 arranged for woodwind quintet by Bill Holcombe. Scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, this flexible quintet also includes an optional bass clarinet part to replace the bassoon when necessary. This quintet is advanced in difficulty.

Farandole is the finale of Georges Bizet s L Arlesienne' Suite No. 2, composed as incidental music to Alphonse Daudet s play of the same name ( The Girl from Arles ). The play, a tragicomedy, is set in a small village in southeastern France and focuses on Frederi, a young peasant who is driven to suicide after discovering the infidelity of his bride to be (L'Arlesienne). The farandole is a celebratory folk dance and is usually led by the most recently married couple ironic, considering the play s conclusion. Furthermore, as in Samuel Beckett s Waiting for Godot , the title character never actually makes an appearance, contributing to the more histrionic aspects of the work. The grand orchestral melody of Farandole was taken from a motif of a popular French Christmas song with origins dating back to the 13th century, known as March of the Kings. Bizet s penchant for rich dramatic orchestration coupled with folk melodies enabled this witty movement to be repurposed as a celebratory work for the yuletide season.

  • Burnette, S :: The Night Before Christmas

The Night Before Christmas is a familiar ballad written by Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863). This setting for flute choir by Sonny Burnette, including narrator and percussion, incorporates occasional quotes from Christmas carols along with some slightly mischievous antics. It is certain to add some Christmas cheer to the holiday season!

Instrumentation: Narrator, 2 Piccolos, 4 C Flutes, Alto flute (or Flute 5), Bass Flute, Percussion. Choosing the right person for the percussion part is a rather important decision, as the part requires a bit of theatrical levity at certain points. An option - instead of having one person execute the percussion part in its entirety, various members of the flute choir may be assigned certain tasks (sleigh bells, triangle, tin can, camera flash, wind chimes, mouth whistle, stomping feet, slide whistle, nose honk, blowing talcum powder from a pipe.)
