With the first appearance of this three-movement concerto for flute and strings in a reduction for flute and piano, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach’s only surviving flute concerto is made accessible to a wider musical audience, with the highly individual musical language of WF Bach perceptible in almost every bar.
Altogether, this is an individual, mature work. The character of the first movement is reminiscent of that of the opening movements of the Symphony in D Major, while the second movement loosely adheres to a minuet structure, with the third movement closing as a lively finale. Its avoidance of highly ambitious demands in favor of stylistic playfulness indicates the composer’s attempt, with his audience in mind, to employ a lighter, more understandable manner of writing.
