Andante e Allegro, LG 104
Lopes-Graca, F

Andante e Allegro, for flute and piano (1984) by Fernando Lopes-Graca, is the only piece that the composer wrote for this formation. In his catalog of chamber music, consisting in about forty works, composed between 1930 and 1989, the flute is present in six numbers of opus (composed between 1971 and 1984), where pieces are intercalated for solo flute and pieces for flute and guitar as is the case of the 4th book of the Melodias Rusticas Portuguesas (1979). In the whole of his vast and diversified instrumental and vocal work, it is noted that Fernando Lopes-Graca showed particular interest in the classical quartet formations of the string quartet and the woodwind quintet.

From the coexistence of two movements of a marked character in the work Andante e Allegro a strong contrast arises: the chromatic writing of an intense and painful lyricism of the Andante precedes the Allegro extremely affirmative and made of motifs that overlap and intersect in the two instruments. In both movements, the tune of the flute is totality explored and the piano installs a rhythmic engine, demanding a great precision in the execution. There are several common motifs to the two movements and the most evident is the first cell of the Andante that is clearly evident as a brief lull before the animated conclusion of the progress.
